Wright Receives Majority of Reps in Scrimmage

MIAMI, Fla. – One week after Miami junior quarterback Kirby Freeman outperformed senior Kyle Wright in the battle for the starting position, coach Randy Shannon decided not to give Freeman a repetition in Friday's scrimmage.

Kirby Freeman watched in full pads as Wright led the majority of the scrimmage with three walk-ons receiving reps as well.

"In the other scrimmage (last Saturday), the other three guys didn't get a rep," Shannon said. "Like I said everyone is going to get an opportunity because you never know who is going to help you."

Wright completed 9 of 23 passes for 101 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

"All the quarterbacks are going to get a shot, like I said. Today it was Kyle and the other guys get an opportunity and we're going to keep doing it throughout spring football."

The three walk-ons were a combined 1 of 8 for five yards.

When asked if Shannon was sending a message to Freeman, he told reporters, "No, no, no. Y'all don't listen."

Shannon does not plan to name his starting quarterback until Aug. 28, five days before the season opener against Marshall.

Javarris James rushed for 83 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries. Tampa Chamberlain grad Kylan Robinson provided a spark late in the scrimmage rushing for 51 yards on five carries.

Sam Shields caught two touchdowns and led all receivers with four receptions and 41 yards.

Lovon Ponder returned a fumble 10 yards for a touchdown.

LEGGETT INJURED: WR Lance Leggett suffered a sprained knee during Thursday's practice and was in crutches at Friday's practice. Leggett is expected to be back in August.
