Redshirt freshman Kylan Robinson has an opportunity to impress the coaches in just such a manner this week leading up to the spring game. Often forgotten because of the rise of Javarris James and the hype of Graig Cooper, Robinson has quietly been having a good spring.
Whether or not it will translate to more carries in the fall remains to be seen, but in the worst case scenario, he's impressed the coaches enough to leave a mark for playing time in the future.
Robinson got a chance to shine at Traz Powell Stadium last Saturday, albeit by unfortunate circumstances. Bluechip freshman Graig Cooper injured his hand and will be out for the remainder of spring. Robinson did not disappoint, carrying five times for 51 yards.
"I got some more reps because Coops was injured," Robinson said about his opportunity during the game. It felt really good. It felt good getting out there and showcasing my skills."
Regardless of Robinson's performance during the spring, he's still predicted to be no better than the third or fourth tailback during the fall. Fans may be examining his place on the depth chart a bit more carefully than other players though, because during the summer Robinson was rumored to be seeking a transfer.
"I'm just here for the team, basically," he said. "Whatever I have to do for the good of the team, I'll do. I'm not looking for playing time necessarily or being the focal point, but I just want to be there for the team and step up when I have to."
"I was not even close to transferring. I love this school and everything about this school. I love my teammates."
One thing that may be in Robinson's favor is that he has experience playing wide receiver at the high school level. In fact, the majority of his career, he lined up at receiver. The coaches have taken note of his ability and have begun to line him up in the slot at times. This move could prove to be a window to Robinson getting more playing time, especially since Miami is down to three scholarship receivers for the remainder of spring.
"During practice, they had me lining up in the slot, just to try it out. I guess they're noticing me. I think they might give me shot."
OTHER NOTES: Robinson reports that his weight is at "205 or 210", down from the 215 he is listed at on the Hurricanes' website.
