UM Already Has Three DT Commitments

Miami currently has five commitments in the 2008 recruiting class and three are defensive tackles. Why the need at that position?

The Hurricanes will likely start senior Teraz McCray and junior Antonio Dixon at defensive tackle in 2007 with junior Dwayne Hendricks as the third guy in the rotation.

Only McCray has substantial playing time of the group and he has battled injuries throughout his career. It will be important for Dixon, Hendricks, or someone else to emerge this season.

The other defensive tackles are sophomores Joe Joseph, Luqman Abdallah, Chaz Washington and redshirt freshman Josh Holmes. Only Chris Perry is listed as a defensive tackle amongst the '07 signees.

Randy Shannon's staff has made a conscious effort to bring in some defensive tackles and don't be surprised if they would recruit more in hopes of switching some to the offensive line.

Justin Thompson Torrance, CA 6-5, 290, 5.20 (40 time)
Micanor Regis Pahokee, FL 6-3, 310, 5.19 (40 time)
Jeremy Lewis West Palm Beach, FL 6-3, 275, 5.00 (40 time)

Lewis was the most recent commmitment of the bunch as he gave his verbal on Sunday.

Thompson also verballed this month with Regis being UM's first commitment of the '08 class back in March.

All three tackles are solid prospects and should be factors. Getting dominant size and ability with the interior linemen is a key to the UM defense. It has been a staple of the successful defenses in recent years and in order for the success to continue, someone must emerge.

Who will be the next defensive tackle at UM?

Will any of the current youngsters emerge into a top-flight player?
