Defensive tackle Kareem Brown was selected in the fourth round by the Patriots as he joined teammate Brandon Meriweather, a first-round draft pick who was selected 24th overall. Brown and Meriweather worked out with the Patriots privately at the UM campus on March 13.
Brown, who could play defensive end or nose tackle in the Patriots' 3-4 defense, recorded 20.5 sacks in his career including 11 sacks last year.
"He has played a couple different positions on the line down at Miami and has some flexibility," said Patriots coach Bill Belicheck. "He has been a good player in their system."
Former Hurricane teammates Vince Wilfork, Santonio Thomas, and Quadtrine Hill are also on the New England roster.
The Patriots were busy on Sunday as they acquired wide receiver Randy Moss from the Oakland Raiders in exchange for a fourth-round selection in this year's draft.
Miami defensive end Baraka Atkins was also selected in the fourth round by the Seattle Seahawks.
A total of five Hurricanes were drafted.
Running back Tyrone Moss and wide receiver Ryan Moore did not get drafted. Both players were highly regarded prospects out of high school, but did not have consistent seasons in their careers. Both will be looking to make an NFL roster as undrafted free agents.
On Saturday, Miami extended its draft record with 13 consecutive years with a first-round draft pick as three players were selected. The Patriots took Meriweather (24th), the Panthers selected Jon Beason (25th), and Greg Olsen went to the Bears (31st).
"It's a great honor for the University of Miami because we set the bar high," said UM head coach Randy Shannon. "It means a lot to the university because we are a family and this is a unique place. A streak this long means we've had a lot of really good players come through here."
