Spencer Adkins (Naples, Fla.) has not seen substantial playing time since arriving to Coral Gables in 2005.
However, he had been productive in the weight room.
This spring, Adkins was in the top two of the three major lifts as he checked in at 5-foot-11, 228 pounds.
He was second in squat, 550 pounds, behind only Andrew Bain, who weighs about 100 pounds more than Adkins.
He had the top power clean lift with 345 pounds.
And he was second in bench press at 410 pounds, behind Bain.
"He is doing some great things in the weight room," strength and conditioning coach Andreu Swasey said. "With the things we are doing we just want the kids to be
In addition to his success in the weight room, Adkins also ran a 4.31 in the 40-yard dash.
His time might surprise some people, but it doesn't surprise the people who remember when he ran under 11 seconds in the 100-yard dash in high school.
Adkins is hoping this success in the weight room will translate to more playing time this season. Coming into his junior year, he has played in 10 games and has three tackles. He has battled through leg injuries both years.
"I hope he can translate it to the field because he is such a powerful and explosive player," Swasey said. "The things out there (in practice), you just hope he can just grasp that side. It just takes time."
For Adkins to receive the playing time he is looking for, he will need to grasp the concept of what the coaches are trying to teach. He must learn the playbook and play with instincts.
Sometimes the process takes longer than others. Adkins, who played defensive end, running back, and linebacker in high school, is still adjusting to being a full-time linebacker.
With the new coaches coming in, Adkins has a fresh start in trying to earn playing time.
"Hopefully he can excel and start to perform out there," Swasey said.
