Defensive end Calais Campbell has his eyes set on the single season sack record at UM set by Daniel Stubbs in 1986 when he recorded 17.
Having the strength and speed to reach that goal as well as being a top pick in the NFL Draft begins in the weight room with strength and conditioning coach Andreu Swasey.
This spring Campbell did well in the testing.
INSDIE THE WEIGHT ROOM
40-Yard Dash - 4.78
Squat - 515
Clean - 330
Bench - 315
Swasey pointed out that Campbell was particularly impressive with his power clean, which ranks fourth on the team, because of his height.
Campbell has came along ways since he arrived on campus in 2004 at 228 pounds.
"He was a real scrawny kid when he came in and our goal was to add as much muscle weight as possible," Swasey said. "For him to maintain his durability and flexibility while staying lean is going to make him more of a powerful, explosive defensive lineman."
Campbell's growth as a redshirted freshman to possibly being a top five pick in the NFL Draft has been exciting for Swasey.
"It is real fun," Swasey said. "We have started to see a lot of success with guys in their third year in the program. It is not an overnight process."
