La. Standout Likes UM

This talented prospect grew up right across a river from former UM standout Edward Reed. Like Reed was at the high school level, he is a standout on both sides of the football. Miami is among those recruiting him, so read on to find out what he thinks about the Hurricanes and where they rank on his current list of favorites.

At 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds, Hahnville, La. standout quarterback/defensive back LaRon Landry has led his team to an impressive 3-0 start this season.

"I've been playing quarterback," Landry said. "On defense, I've just been going in on 3rd and long situations but for Sunday's game, I'll be playing 48 minutes on defense."

Landry will lead his team into battle this weekend against one of the state's top-ranked teams - East St. John. Landry said he's been watching tape of his opponent and commented on a couple UM recruiting prospects.

"They have a couple defensive ends that really get after it," he said. "Vegas Franklin and [Kirston] Pittman. Vegas looks like a stronger defensive end. They actually were playing Pittman at free safety but he'll probably play on the line against us. They are both big and quick though and we know that we have to be able to block those guys if we're going to win."

Landry, who is preparing to take the ACT, said the recruiting process has led to his phone ringing a lot.

"All day, every day," he laughed. "Some nights, it won't stop ringing. Just recently, I've talked to LSU, Florida, Colorado, Auburn, UL, USC, Georgia Tech, Miami, and a couple others."

The talented safety prospect said three schools currently stand out above the rest.

"I'm looking the hardest at Florida, LSU, and Colorado right now," he said. "But I'm trying to stay wide open because I still need to take my visits."

When asked about a possible favorite, Landry said the recruiting process is even.

"Everyone is still even," he said. "I grew up a fan of the Miami Hurricanes actually. But of all the schools recruiting me right now, they're the only one that hasn't offered. It just don't look like they're recruiting me real hard. I talked to Coach CJ and he said they'll be watching me."

Landry was asked if the Hurricanes offered, would they enter into his list of top choices.

"If they offer, I'll definitely go visit them," he said. "I grew up a Miami fan. Edward Reed is from this area. He's from right across the river. There's a lot to like about Miami but they haven't offered me yet."

Landry said he'll be setting up his official visits for after the season.

"I'm trying to wait till later in the year because I want to take my visits after the season," he said. "I'm going to try to take them all before basketball season starts but that might be tough. I might not even play [basketball] this year, I'm not sure yet."
