It was announced at a press conference on Tuesday that former University of Miami defensive lineman Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and his wife, Dany, have given UM a very large financial gift.

"This is a very exciting day for the University of Miami football program," President Shalala said. "Today we announce the largest gift ever from a former student athlete. It is a one million dollar gift from Dany and Dwayne Johnson. They are committed to the success of our football program and on behalf of the entire University, we couldn't be more pleased. Both of them are professionals. They worked hard for their money and they are proud graduates of the University of Miami."

Johnson, who is one of the most popular professional wrestlers in the history of that sport, spoke about the gift.

"I remember this particular room when I attempted to study," Johnson said. "It's an honor for Dany and I to be here. We always said that the University of Miami, being a student athlete here, was a tremendous part of our lives. The skill set we learned here -- talking about commitment, sacrifice, the intense desire to succeed and win. When you win, it's a team concept. All those things we learned here as student athletes.

"In addition, Dany and I are proud to give this gift under tremendous leadership. We 100-percent believe in Coach Randy Shannon. He was my coach who was very influencial in my life. (In my movie) that coach was Sean Porter. A tremendous influence for that character was Randy Shannon. We believe in Randy Shannon's vision."

The biggest question is how will the money be used. Dany answered that.

"It's an unrestricted gift," she said. "Whatever Coach Shannon wants to do, we believe in him. We know he'll utilize it to the best."
