For the past couple of months, the Texas A&M coaching staff has been planning to welcome an El Camino JC (CA) prospect for an official visit to the Lone Star state for this weekend's home game with the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Five-star defensive end Simi Kuli was scheduled to take in Aggieland this weekend, but he's headed to Baton Rouge instead. However, another Division I prospect from El Camino will be boarding a plane for College Station Friday morning. Fullback Patrick Hill is making the trip from Los Angeles Friday, and he's excited to get to Texas.
"This is my first trip to Texas, but I do have extended family living in Fort Worth," Hill said. "I'm looking forward to it. I hear College Station is a great college football town, and Kyle Field has the best stadium atmosphere."
The 5-foot-10, 248-pound fullback prides himself as a well-rounded player and is versatile out of the backfield. Hill has run a personal best 4.67 in the 40.
"My strength is my blocking. I have no problems delivering a blow," Hill said. "I'm versatile. I'm a pretty good runner with the ball, and I like catching passes out of the backfield."
El Camino is currently 4-1, having been upset by Bakersfield two weeks ago. The team has a bye this week, which has given Hill the opportunity to visit the Aggies this weekend. While he's disappointed in the loss, Hill is satisfied with his individual play this season, and he is confident the team will bounce back the rest of the way.
"We let that one game get away from us. We've learned from it and won't let that happen again," Hill said. "I'm satisfied with my play so far this season. You can always find areas where you can do better, but overall I'm pleased with where I am."
Apparently, so are several Division I coaches. The Aggies have come on strong, but other programs like Colorado and Ole' Miss among others are seriously pursuing the sophomore. Last spring, USC coaches were taking a long look at the multi-talented fullback. However, it appears Texas A&M may have the inside track going into this weekend's visit.
"I'd say that Texas A&M is my leader. Their fullback is graduating and they don't have a scholarship fullback returning next year," Hill said. "I've watched A&M on TV and they have a good program. You always hear about the stadium and their fans. I can't wait to see it for myself."
For now, Hill does not hold a written scholarship offer from Texas A&M, but this weekend will go a long way in determining whether his gets an offer.
"They said they want to see what kind of person I am and see how I fit with the program and the players," Hill said. "If they like me, Coach Tommerdahl says there's a good chance they will offer me on my visit."
So what will Hill do if the Texas A&M coaches do offer him a scholarship this weekend? Will he commit?
"My dad is coming with me on the trip. I'll talk it over with him," Hill said. "If my dad and I like what we see and I get along with everybody, there's a chance I commit. I have to look at what's best for me. If it's A&M, then I'll commit."
At this point in the middle of the season, Hill has no other official visits planned after this weekend. Stay tuned to the Aggie Websider to get the latest on Hill's visit Sunday afternoon.
