"Colin (McCarthy) was out. I don't know the status of him. Romeo (Davis) is probably done for the year."
Davis becomes the second Hurricane linebacker lost for the season because of injuries. Glenn Cook is the other and both were starters last season. Depth is getting very thin at the position.
"We're missing a bunch of linebackers," he said. "You can't get any off the waiver wire. You gotta coach the guys you got. We got Tavares Gooden, Spencer (Adkins), Darryl (Sharpton) is just coming off an injury and isn't 100-percent. You got Eric Houston and Allen Bailey. That's it for linebackers because Kylan (Robinson) is still learning and McCarthy is out. You're dealing with maybe four (healthy) linebackers."
Shannon, who didn't even mention Demetri Stewart's name, says that's important not only on defense but also on special teams since linebackers are usually a key part of those units.
"To put all three starting linebackers on special teams, you won't have them at the end of the game. You have to choose them -- put two on this special teams, two on that one."
Linebacker isn't the only position that has been hit hard with injuries.
"The same (goes) with the tight ends," he said. "We have no fullbacks right now (as well). We gotta find a way to get everyone back healthy."
Depth at defensive tackle has been an area of concern for the Hurricanes all season. Things didn't get any better when Antonio Dixon went down to an injury yesterday.
"I think (Antonio) Dixon will be out for awhile -- minimum, unless he has a miraculous healing coach at home, he'll be out four weeks," he said. "Josh Holmes played great yesterday. We got three tackles (Holmes, Dwayne Hendricks, and Teraz McCray). We'll bring one of the scout team guys up this week (Luqman Abdallah, Chaz Washington, Joe Joseph) to be the fourth guy."
