Shannon: UM/FSU Recruiting Different Players

Head coach Randy Shannon talked about Saturday's Florida State game on Tuesday. Among the things he talked about was some history on the series, explains how the two schools are recruiting different types of players, his relationship with one of FSU's players, the QB situation for the Noles, and much more.

"This week is Florida State," Randy Shannon said. "It'll be a great atmosphere, a great game. It's always been a great game. I think there's only two times where it's been a blowout and one was when we were on probation. The last couple years it's been field goals late in the game, goal line stands, overtime. It's an ACC game, also a road game for us. We gotta get better on the road. We gotta start fast, keep the crowd out of the game early. It's gonna be a great time for both teams."

On the wide right victory from a few years ago:
That was a win and that was the greatest thing about it. The last couple years they've been capitalizing on mistakes we had. If it comes down to it, I'll accept a win (like that) and keep moving forward.

On the struggles of both teams recently:
Both teams are trying to get a win and get back on track. There are high standards at both places.

On the low scoring games in this series recently:
A score 6-3 could be a great game, great for the defensive coaches. A game like Boise State and Nevada (with lots of scoring) would be great for the offensive coaches.

On breaking FSU's two-game winning streak in the series:
The series is always like that. Florida State will win three, four in a row. Miami will win three, four in a row. Jimmy (Johnson) won some, Dennis (Erickson) won some then lost some, Butch (Davis) lost some and then won some. They won two, three in a row and hopefully that streak stops this week and we can start a new one.

On the recruiting ramifications:
Florida State's got a lot of commitments also. We're on different types of kids. It's unique when it all comes down to it. You have the three state schools, USF, UCF, FIU, everyone will get their share of kids. You can get the highest rated player in the nation but if he doesn't fit with what you're doing, he may never play. You gotta get guys to fit with what you're doing.

On any relationships he still has with any FSU players from time spent recruiting them:
When I was in the ACC (meetings), I saw Antone Smith. We sat and talked for 30 minutes. Now we're friends but it's gametime. I'll probably see him before the game and wave at him, talk to him a bit after the game.

on Florida State's defense:
They're doing a great job. They got four guys up front getting pressure, stopping the run. They're very physical up front. It'll be a big challenge for both teams.

On his expectations for Kyle Wright in this game:
Kyle has to execute getting the ball into our guys' hands. Don't take sacks.

On Xavier Lee:
He can beat you with his arm but has scrambling ability too. We gotta rattle him early and don't let him get into a rhythem. Hopefully we'll get us some big plays on defense.
