Local Player Emerging

This talented linebacker/free safety is having an outstanding season and several schools are taking notice. Read on to find out what he thinks about the Hurricanes, and get his insights on two other UM prospects that he grew up with.

If you had to hand out a Defensive Player of the Year award through six games in Dade County, Jackson standout linebacker Antonio McKnight would be a leading candidate.

At 6-feet and 190 pounds, McKnight has registered 66 tackles, six sacks, four caused fumbles, two interceptions, and one defensive touchdown to help his team to a 3-3 record.

McKnight, who ran a 4.6 at the NIKE Training Camp to go with a 30-inch vertical jump and a 4.2-shuttle time, is preparing to take the SAT after missing the test last Saturday because of a family issue that came up.

McKnight, who is rarely home to take recruiting calls, said he's talked to several coaches on the phone at his school.

"A lot of the coaches come by the school," he said. "They can't really talk there but we talk on the phone. Schools like Central Florida, Louisville, Kansas, Rutgers, and Florida State. They all say they're watching and to keep on my grades."

McKnight, who hasn't received any scholarship offers yet, has not yet set up any official visits.

"I'm trying to figure out those right now," he said. "I guess you have to have a test score to report before you can set them up so I'm trying to get into the testing center."

McKnight said he's also had interest from UM defensive coordinator Randy Shannon.

"He stopped by the school and I've missed a couple calls from him," he said. "Miami's tight. I mean, they Miami. I went to their game against FAM and had a good time."

McKnight also had some interesting things to say about other UM prospects that he grew up with.

Terrell Walden - "I talked to him just recently," he said. "He said he's trying to pass the SAT's because he wants to go back to Miami in January."

Leo Waiters - "Me and him grew up together," he said. "We always went to school together but then when we got to high school, he went to The West. He's having a real good year and told me that Miami has offered him and that's where he plans on going but he wants to take his trips."

McKnight said the Hurricanes are one of his current favorites.

"It'd be UM, Florida State, Kansas, Central Florida, and Rutgers," he said. "If I had to take my five visits, those are the schools I'd probably go check out."
