Shannon Watches DE Last Night

UM defensive coordinator was out watching a local prospect that he's been recruiting all year on Thursday night. Read on to find out what this talented defensive end thinks about Coach Shannon, why he likes Miami, and where the Hurricanes rank on his current list of favorites.

At 6-foot-6 and 255 pounds, Miami (Fla.) Braddock standout defensive end Tranell Morant and his team took on Coral Gables earlier tonight and one of the coaches in attendance, according to Morant, was UM defensive coordinator Randy Shannon.

Morant, who had 13 sacks heading into tonight's game, is a full academic qualifier.

"Coach Shannon has been calling every week," Morant said. "He told me he's going to be at the game. He knows that I'm real interested and he said they're getting close to offering me. I'm hoping I play well enough for it to happen real soon."

Morant, who received calls from Michigan State, Florida, and Miami all on Wednesday night, was at the Orange Bowl last Saturday.

"I went to the FSU game," he said. "It went really good, I had a nice time. The game was close. I saw a lot of other recruits there but didn't really talk to any of them. With all the top guys trying to go to UM, they should be able to get a good class."

The talented defensive end has scheduled a visit to Rutgers for December 6, but the rest are up in the air yet.

"My top five are Georgia, N.C. State, UM, Auburn, and Florida," he said. "I've already been to NC State and Auburn for their camps so I may not need to visit them again. That's why I'm setting up visits with other schools like Rutgers. I really don't have a favorite, just a top 5 for now."

Morant has scholarship offers from all of his favorites except Miami. So how close does Morant feel the Canes are from offering?

"Coach Shannon has been recruiting me all along, so they must be pretty interested," he said. "Miami's picky, man. But they can be. They're the best. They're the champs. They can pretty much do whatever they want. They know I'm right in their backyard so maybe they're focusing on players from outside the area. If they offer, that would be great but I'd still take my trips and all that."
