Canes complete sweep of Cincinnati

Freshman Chris Hernandez was the story of the night as he pitched 6 scoreless innings while recording 8 strikeouts. The Monsignor Pace alum got his first career victory as he only surrendered 3 hits and finished his outing without giving up a walk. The Canes pitching staff held the Bearcats to only 5 runs over the weekend and were dominant throughout the series.

Miami 's offense was held scoreless the first four innings until Jemile Weeks delivered a 2 run double that would turn out to be the game winning hit. In the 6th inning, Mark Sobolewski made it a 3-0 lead when he doubled in Yonder Alonso. After a Joey Terdoslavich groundout, Dave Dinatale singled in Sobolewski. Then junior Adam Severino hit the first homerun in is young Hurricane career to blow the lead open to 6-0. Jemile Weeks added a solo shot in the 7th to increase to lead to 7-0. Yasmani Grandal doubled in Adam Severino in the 8th inning for his first career hit and RBI.

Jason Santana relieved Chris Hernandez and recorded a rare 3 inning save. Santana who has been struggling in practice looked sharp in his first outing of the year. The junior had 3 strikeouts in his 3 innings of work to complete the 8-0 victory.

The Canes will face the Florida Marlins in an exhibition game on Tuesday at 3:05 at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter. Miami returns to competitive play with a 3 game series versus the Florida Gators at Mark Light Stadium.


Jim Morris: "It was great seeing Chris pitch well today. Santana was also great and it is big because we are still looking for 4-5 guys that can start."

"You only have fun when you win and our guys had fun this weekend, It was exciting for the team.

"I do not know that our strength is power, but we definitely have some. I knew Jemile and Severino had that kind of pop."

"Overall I do not think we swung the bat as well as we could this weekend. We did a good job late today of hitting the ball."

"It was good to see Severino play like that. He was really excited about getting that home run as every saw."

Jemile Weeks "The day went pretty good. I still have some work to do, but it was nice to go out there and put some good swings on balls."

"Getting the sweep was good. It gets our confidence. It got us more motivated. We know what we can do. We also know we can do better than we did this weekend. Hopefully it means bigger things in the future."

"The pitching was great. Last year that was not always the case. Those guys have put their work in and it showed this weekend."

Chris Hernandez "I wasn't really nervous. I was just excited to get things going. After that first pitch all the butterflies I go away. I knew I was going to throw good. Not all lot of hitters can hit me when I throw good and keep the ball low."

"It feels good to get a win. I hope the teammates and coaches have the same confidence in me. I am looking forward to the next start."

Adam Severino "I was more focused than ever on my homerun. I realized I was on the ball the entire day. I just wanted to square up and get of good piece of the ball."

"It has been a dream. It has been a lifelong dream of mine to play here. It is amazing. I have never been that pumped before."

"That is just how I am (Talking about running the bases on his HR). I hustle on every play. I feel like I would be cheating the game if I didn't."

Jason Santana "I just tried to go right after hitters. It has been tough recovering from my surgery, but I just went after hitters today and it went well."

"I am used to starting since high school, but it is not bad coming out of the bullpen. It felt good."

Yasmani Grandal "It is great for the team to start like this. We have Florida next weekend. The pitching was great this weekend and the offense came through today.

"It felt really good to get my first hit. I was 0-3 so it was nice to get a hit on my last at bat today."
