The Canes kicked off spring practices today with a 2 hour practice in shorts. Graig Cooper, DeMarcus Van Dyke, Khalil Jones, and Bruce Johnson did not practice today because of their commitment to University of Miami track team. They will begin practicing next Tuesday.

"Practice was good today, said Shannon . "There were some positive things today. We did not have any illegal procedures or fumbled snaps by the quarterbacks. Defensively we did not have any offsides or encroachment penalties. We also forced some turnovers. Overall, It was a good day on offense and defense."

The Canes first team depth chart for the most part today was:

At Quarterback Robert Marve, Jacory Harris, and Cannon Smith rotated every 6 plays on offense and everyone was given an equal amount of snaps. Javarris James was the first team running back and his H-Back was Dedrick Epps. John Calhoun was also participated as a H-back, while Patrick Hill served as a traditional fullback. At wide receiver, Kayne Farquharson and Leonard Hankerson were on the first team. Aldarius Johnson was in the 2nd unit at wideout. Richard Gordon and Chris Zellner split time at tight end. Coach Shannon talked about the first day of what looks to be an intense competition at quarterback. He was pleased with Robert Marve, Jacory Harris, and Cannon Smith's effort today.

"I am looking at execution and stuff like that from the Quarterback position today," said Shannon . "Marve and Jacory bring leadership to the position also. When they get in the huddle, the guys know that these two guys have won championships and completed passes. They have been coming out on their own throwing the ball already and they understand what we are trying to do offensively. Cannon also did some great things today throwing the football also. All those guys are gym rats and love football. When you have guys like that, It is a good start to having a winning football team."

Jacory Harris, Cannon Smith, Patrick Hill, John Calhoun Aldarius Johnson, Marcus Forston, Arthur Brown, Sean Spence, and Jake Wieclaw took part in their first college practice today. Coach Shannon talked about the early enrollees first day of practice.

"It lets them get ahead, Shannon . "When you get to college the speed of the game really changes. They have to get accustomed to the speed of the game. They have 15 days to get ahead of it before fall practice. They will probably by accustomed to it by next week. Those guys are going to add to the competition."

Shannon talked about entering spring practice no longer being a rookie head coach

"It was my first time out as a head coach last year, said Shannon . "Now you are more relaxed and calm. The players understand what we are trying to get done offensively and defensively now. They know the tempo and mentality we want. They did good today as a total unit. They went out there flew around and had some fun."

*Kayne Farquharson caught a touchdown today and also had a couple of 30 yard receptions.

*Aldarius Johnson and Jermaine McKenzie caught several short passes throughout the practice.

*The defense recovered two fumbles today.

*Several of the defensive players mentioned how there were a lot more zone blitzes today than there were last year.

*Romeo Davis was granted his extra year of eligibility and Glenn Cook is still awaiting word on his status, although Coach Shannon seems confident.
