Epps enjoys competition at TE

There are high expectations in Miami this year for tight end Dedrick Epps and CanesTime.com caught up with him to talk about Saturday's scrimmage, spring in general, and the competition at tight end.

Q: How has your spring practice being going so far?
A: It has been going pretty well. We had to get back into the groove a little bit after spring break, but it was ok. All three of the tight ends are working on the blocking and catching everyday. As an offense everyone is learning the new system.

Q: How was Saturday's scrimmage?
A: We started out kind of slow on offense, but we started to get it going later. The defense did a good job. We had some good plays and we had some bad plays. We just have to keep working on the small things.

Q: How was your day?
A: I had a couple of catches. I had one go for about 60 or 70 yards.

Q: How was it for you finally being able to participate in a scrimmage after missing the first one because of class?
A: It was a lot of fun. I wish I could have played in the first scrimmage, but I had a midterm. Everyone already got to play in a scrimmage so I just started to have my fun today.

Q: How is the competition at tight end going?
A: We are always competing. It has been like that since I have been here. Everyone has to compete, because Coach Shannon is only going to play the best player. Everyday is a test to see who is going to get the job done.

Q: What are your goals this spring?
A: I just want to get better. I really want to work on my blocking. I think that is the weaker part of my game. I want to fine tune my catching skills also.

Q: What do you expect for yourself this season?
A: I just want to produce. I am not worried about who starts or anything like that. I just want to make sure that when I play that I make plays. I just want to do as much as I can for the team.

Q: What are your thoughts on the quarterbacks?
A: They have really stepped up. They did a great job at learning the offense so fast. Marve has the year on both of them, but they are all competing.
