Six Canes selected on Day 1 of MLB Draft

The top-ranked Hurricanes had six players selected on the first day of the MLB Draft on Thursday with more expected on Friday.

First baseman Yonder Alonso was the highest Hurricane selected, when Cincinnati took him with the seventh pick overall.

Second baseman Jemile Weeks was selected 12th overall by Oakland. Carlos Gutierrez was the third Hurricane taken in round one, when Minnesota took him with the 27th pick overall.

Outfielder Dennis Raben was the first Hurricane taken in round two, when Seattle used its 66th overall pick on him. Blake Tekotte was the second UM outfielder selected, when San Diego took him with the 101st overall pick in round three. Third baseman Mark Sobolewski was the sixth and final Hurricane taken on the first day, when Toronto nabbed him with the 129th overall pick in round four.

The draft will resume on Friday, starting with round number seven.
