Brian Monroe Makes UM Commitment

This talented player made a commitment to UM following his unofficial visit on Sunday. Read on to get the details.

As I reported on Nov. 11, the University of Miami was likely to land a commitment from Palm Beach Gardens punter Brian Monroe today.

It happened.

"I committed to Miami today," Monroe said tonight after his unofficial visit to UM.

"It went really good," he said. "I had a great time there. I had a chance to talk to some coaches and then Coach Coker. I went around checking everything out. The facilities were great. I really liked the school. The campus is different than Florida State and Florida and that's what made it stand out. Plus, I got a chance to see a practice and they looked really sharp."

Monroe said he got word of the scholarship offer at the beginning of his visit.

"Coach Coker offered me when I got there and then I took a tour," he said. "I made the actual commitment when he and I talked at the end. I was real excited."

Monroe said he was told he'll have a chance to start as a true freshman.

"Freddie Capshaw is leaving and they said I'll have a chance to win the starting job as a freshman. They have Jon Peattie and Mark Gent but they're more like kickers and will be competing to be the place kicker."

Monroe said his commitment to UM is final and he'll be telling the other schools on his list.

"I'm definitely going to Miami," he said. "I'm taking my visit on January 24 and I'm going to start telling the other schools that I've committed already."

Monroe said he's excited about his commitment and the class UM is putting together.

"I'm No. 6," he said. "They have Kyle Wright, two offensive linemen, a Junior College transfer, and Dave Howell. I think they're putting together a real good class." UM also has a commitment from linebacker Glenn Cook.
