McCarthy: We're not getting it done

Colin McCarthy is having a solid junior season so far for the Hurricanes. Read on to see what he's saying about this week's game, his big fumble return against FSU last year, the mistakes the defense has been making, the lack of turnovers being generated, and more.

Q: Was last year's win at FSU supposed to be the launching pad for this team to get back on track?
A: After that win we had a lot of momentum, going up to their place and winning in a hostile environment. Obviously the rest of the season didn't play out the way we wanted it to, but we expect to get a win vs. FSU this year.

Q: How much do you think about your fumble recovery?
A: I don't think of it that much. Every now and then I will put the film on and watch. It was a great thing, but I have a lot more to do.

Q: What did that play mean to you?
A: It was great. You know when you make a play vs. FSU it will be remembered for a long time. It is a clip you will see over and over again in pre-game clips and it is something special.

Q: Would you say that is the best play of your career so far?
A: Yes, it is at the top. When you consider the time left in the game and the fact they were trying to drive down and take the lead it was a huge play. It is at the top for me so far.

Q: Does a win here erase last week?
A: The ACC is still wide open as far as our thought processes. We feel we win out we still have a chance to win, and that's our mindset. It will not erase anything,g but it would let us get back on track.

Q: Is the hype still there with the Miami-FSU rivalry?
A: It's always going to be there. As far as the tradition with the rivalry, to be able to play in such a big game like that even if it's not amped up as big as it normally is the players still have that feeling. Its still our rival and you can throw the record away once the game starts.

Q: What is the problem with not finishing with this team?
A: We're not finishing making tackles, not finishing with blocks, a whole bunch of things. We had an opportunity to win last week and didn't.

Q: How do you practice finishing this week?
A: Just continue to compete at a high level. Practices here should be harder than the games with the competitive level on each side. We need to keep working hard, competing, and the rest will take care of itself.

Q: Do you know any players on Florida State 's team?
A: Yes, I do. I'm sure they have some hard feelings about last year. I'm excited about the game. It should be a great game.

Q: Would you have thought after winning that FSU game last year that it would be the last game you would win that year?
A: No, I would never have thought that. As far as coming off a win like that, you figure the momentum you're carrying from there would carry on the rest of the season. Obviously that didn't happen. We just need to, as far as game by game, take it for what it is and try to come out with a win.

Q: Is it shocking that the defense has only one interception?
A: Yeah, especially with how much we stress turnovers. The lack of turnovers we're having is kind of disappointing. With the type of athletes we have, the intensity we bring we feel we should have more turnovers.

Q: Is there any reason for the lack of turnovers?
A: No, I couldn't tell you. Just working more on maybe stripping the ball, understanding what their routes are so we can make plays on them rather than being a half-second late. It adds up to a whole bunch of things, but we're obviously not getting it done.
