Canes officially eliminated from ACC race

After Clemson defeated Virginia this afternoon, the Hurricanes were officially eliminated from the ACC Coastal Division race.

The Hurricanes went into today tied at the top of the ACC Coastal Division standings. The Canes still had a chance to win it but needed some help. Today, the Canes needed N.C. State to knock off North Carolina. That happened, eliminating the Tar Heels. However, it needed Virginia to knock off Clemson to stay tied at the top of the division and that didn't happen. Clemson won that game 13-3.

The Canes are now in a three-way tie with Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech. Even if the Canes were to beat N.C. State next weekend, their chances are over.

If Virginia Tech beats Duke and Virginia, they'll own the tiebreaker over Georgia Tech and Miami because of their record within the division (4-1). If the Hokies lose a game, that will send Georgia Tech because of their head-to-head victory over Miami on Thursday.

The Canes finish out the regular season against N.C. State and have already qualified for a bowl game. Some of the remaining possibilities for the Canes are the Gator Bowl (ACC 3), the Champs Sports Bowl (ACC 4), the Music City Bowl (ACC 5), the Car Care Bowl (ACC 6), the Emerald Bowl (ACC 7), and the Humamitarian Bowl (ACC 8).
