Whipple: I'm here to win a championship

Mark Whipple was announced as Miami's new offensive coordinator this morning and he met with the media this afternoon. What was Whipple talking about? Read on to see what he was saying!

* "This is a very special place," was one of the first things Whipple said.

* His main focus here will be to win a national championship, something he hasn't done at the Div 1A level yet.

* He missed teaching young kids and working with college players.

* He says that Randy Shannon is what sold him on coming here. He believes Coach Shannon will get a championship and he thinks they'll make a great team together.

* Interesting one: Whip says he won't know what type of offense he's going to run until he learns the personnel.

* He says it's not about what type of offense is installed, it's more about how it's taught to the kids.

* He says he really likes what he sees from the kids around here so far. Jacory is a "great kid" he says.

* He'll spend some time visiting with top recruits between now and next week to help finish out a strong class. He says he really enjoys recruiting.

* Balance is the key to any offense. He wants balance.

* Whip says he learned a lot of new things from coaching in the NFL. He says we'll see some of the things he learned about in Pittsburgh and Philly and some of the things you see from Arizona's offense.

* Whip says he'll tailor all he knows around the talent that is here on this offense.

* He didn't want the QB coaching job in Philly because he wanted to call plays again.

* He will be hitting the road recruiting immediately.

* He's already watched the Cal, FSU, and UVA games and saw "some good things" to work with.

* He says that Miami was one of the very few places in the college game that he would've come back to.

* He talked about how when in Pittsburgh, Najeh Davenport would always be telling Whip how special UM was when he was there.

* He shared a cool story: When at the Pro Bowl last year, Whip was talking to Tom Brady and Brady was talking about Andre Johnson. Whip said Brady was saying how amazing it must have been at Miami with all those great players. That comment stuck out to him ever since, especially coming from someone like Brady.

* Whip said even Andy Reid told him that he needs to be calling plays somewhere again and that helped play a role in his decision, too.
