Spring Preview: Tight Ends

The University of Miami began spring football on Tuesday, becoming the first Division 1 team to start spring drills. Lets take a closer look at the team's tight end situation heading into spring.

The Players:
Daniel Adderley (6-6, 215, R-SO), Dedrick Epps (6-4, 250, SR), Richard Gordon (6-4, 270, SR), Tervaris Johnson (6-2, 220, JR), and Steven Wesley (6-3, 235, JR)

What They've Done:
Adderley: has not yet played
Epps: 30 catches for 387 yards and 3 TD's
Gordon: 4 catches for 32 yards
Johnson: 0 catches
Wesley: has played defense his whole career

As Recruits:
Adderley: 2-star, NR WR
Epps: 4-star, #12 TE
Gordon: 4-star, #15 DE
Johnson: 3-star, #37 S
Wesley: 4-star, #31 DE

Outlook:
The Canes are very thin at this position. Sure, they have bodies but the only proven pass-catcher of the group (Epps) is sitting out spring recovering from knee surgery. That'll give the four others a good opportunity to step up but it also shows how thin the Canes are here. None of the four tight ends competing this spring were recruited to Miami as tight ends. Gordon came over from defense and while he's an asset in the running game because of his blocking skills, he has just two career catches. Johnson, who came to Miami as a safety, has played just on special teams his entire career. Wesley was a starter on the defensive line at times last season but he played tight end some in high school and was switched over for the spring to help with depth. There's a good chance he'll end up back on defense in the fall. Randy Shannon announced that Adderley was no longer playing football after the bowl game. Now, he's back on the team and we believe this could be his last experience playing at the University of Miami. Perhaps Coach Whipple's new offense can utilize some of these guys in the passing game but it won't be easy based on their production levels up to this point. Epps is far and away the best pass-catcher of the group so Miami's recruiting woes at this position will be shown here this spring.
