Certain players taking on bigger roles

Spring football has been going on for over a week now and the team will scrimmage for the first time this Saturday. Read on to see how certain players are doing and what's expected of them.

Q&A with Randy Shannon

Q: How is Sam Shields transition to corner going?
A: He is making a nice transition. He is coming along quicker than I expected. He is picking up on a lot of things defensively. He is breaking on the football real well. He has looked good, but you really won't know for sure until you see him in a scrimmage. Mentally he has been great. He has known all the coverages.

Q: What prompted the switch?
A: Depth at the corner position. If we did not move Sam and Ryan with Van Dyke out we would only have 3 guys at the position.

Q: How hard is it for a senior to make that move?
A: Its an adjustment, but I saw on special teams last year he had the attitude for it. He made a lot of tackles. He isn't afraid to hit people. He made some plays for us. He has the aggressiveness and he has quick feet.

Q: How important is it for a QB to establish himself as the clear back-up?
A: It is important. They are competing now for the job and when A.J. gets here he will jump into the competition as well.

Q: What are you looking for in the first scrimmage?
A: Nothing in particular. Just to see how the guys do under pressure. We want to see who can make plays and make tackles.

Q: How is Mike James going to fit in?
A: Don't know yet. We have not made a tackle yet. We won't know until we see him in live action.

Q: How is Matt Pipho progressing?
A: He is a 5th year senior and some OL take some time to develop. He stepped in during the Virginia game last year we did not miss a beat. He is coming along well. He has a opportunity now and he is looking to get things done.

Q: How is Marcus Forston doing and what did you think of his play last year?
A: He made some good plays and some not so good plays. He is coming along picking up the defense. He is progressing the way you would expect him to. He just needs to keep working.

Q: What do you see out of Daryl Sharpton this spring?
A: It is time for him to step up. He is a senior and he knows it is his time. We will see if he can do that during spring and into the season.
