Local corner: I'd fit in perfectly at UM

Tony Grimes is one of the top cornerback prospects in south Florida for the Class of 2010 and CanesTime.com caught up with him to talk about the latest on the recruiting front.

Tony Grimes is quickly making a name for himself in south Florida. Since the start of last season, he's established himself as one of the top cornerback prospects in the area.

At 6-feet and 170 pounds, Grimes finished his junior season with 41 solo tackles, five picks, and 15 pass breakups.

"I had a pretty good year but I know I can do better," Grimes said. "I feel like I bring a lot of leadership to my team and I'm a playmaker out there."

Grimes has already attracted the interest of several college programs. He has written offers from Purdue, Oregon, and FAU. Many others seem close.

"Others have shown a lot of interest but those are the ones who have offered so far," he said. "My top five would be Florida, Oregon, Florida State, Ohio State, and Miami but I'm definitely considering all the ones who offered me so far."

The standout corner grew up a Florida fan and he's hoping the Gators come through with an offer.

"They're a winning program and they bring a lot of hype," he said. "I've been talking to Coach Bedford and they seem real interested."

Another in-state program Grimes has a lot of interest in is Miami.

"They actually came to the school a couple months ago," he said. "If they offer me, they'd definitely be in my top three. I like how they're a young program on the rise. I think I would fit in perfectly down there."

Grimes talked about what he'll be looking for in a school.

"The graduation rate is first and then what the depth chart looks like at my position," he said.

Grimes, who claims a 2.8 GPA inside the classroom, is coached at Hollywood Hills by former Cane Scott Barnwell.
