3/27 Practice Report

The Hurricanes held their final spring practice before their annual spring game tomorrow and CanesTime.com was there for all the action. Read on for the latest coming from the practice fields.

CanesTime.com's Mike Gohari was at practice today and provided these nuggets:

* It was very windy out there today.

* It was a reunion for former players so there were a bunch including Andre Johnson and Jessie Armstead.

* Incoming recruits there included Stephen Plein, Dyron Dye, Ray Ray Armstrong, and A.J. Highsmith (who appeared to be in the 5-11 range and spent the day around the quarterbacks).

* Joel Figueroa, Lee Chambers, Baby J, Colin McCarthy, and Dedrick Epps were all still out with injuries.

* The first O-Line was the same as it's been all spring -- Jason Fox, Orlando Franklin, AJ Trump, Harland Gunn, and Matt Pipho from left to right. The same second unit was there too (Ben Jones, Brandon Washington, Tyler Horn, Ian Symonette, and Jermaine Johnson).

* The first two receivers on the field for 11 on 11 drills were Laron Byrd and Leonard Hankerson.

* The first two defensive ends on the field were Olivier Vernon and Andrew Smith. The starting tackles today were Josh Holmes and Joe Joseph.

* In pass-rushing situations, the first DL was Marcus Robinson and Smith at end with Steven Wesley and Holmes at tackle.

* The quarterbacks worked a lot on throwing on the run today. The highlight of the day for them was Jacory hitting Hankerson for a 65 yard touchdown, when Hank beat Brandon Harris.

* OC Mark Whipple was seemingly more vocal today than he's been in recent practices.

* Mike James continued playing well and had a first down catch on one of the first plays in team drills.

* Damien Berry scored a touchdown on a sweep by beating Joe Wylie to the endzone.

* The best run of the day was when Graig Cooper went off right tackle for 60 yards and a touchdown.

* Cannon Smith had a ball broken up by Randy Phillips on one play and Sam Shields on another.

* Sean Spence had an interception of a Taylor Cook pass.

More coming later, including some player interviews.
