UM Lands Big Commitment

The University of Miami landed a huge commitment yesterday when tight end Louis Irizarry picked the Hurricanes. Irizarry had been committed to Ohio State for several months.

"I thought all along that Ohio State was the best place for me," Irizarry said. "It seemed to have everything I wanted. But then I started to learn more about Miami and what they have to offer. About two months ago I decided that I was going to take an official visit down there just to see what it was like."

Irizarry made the visit with his father in late December and came away very impressed.

"I loved it," he said. "Coach Stoops talked me into coming down and I really enjoyed it. The weather, the beaches, the facilities, the coaches, the players, everything. It was better than I expected actually."

The standout tight end decided to re-think his decision over Christmas break.

"I was still leaning towards Ohio State but then I watched the Fiesta Bowl and that had a lot to do with it," he said. "Even though Miami lost, they threw to the tight end all night. Kellen Winslow caught 11 passes in the title game alone. Ohio State's tight ends weren't really involved. It made me think even more about Miami and even though they lost the game, I realized it was the best situation for me. I'm happy, my family is happy, and I can't wait to be a part of it."

Irizarry will follow in the long line of great tight ends at UM in recent years - Mondriel Fulcher, Bubba Franks, Jeremy Shockey, and now Winslow.

"Hopefully I can add my name to that list someday," he said. "They'll definitely give me a chance, I know that. And I know they'll continue reloading and playing for national titles. I saw the types of guys they were getting when I took my visit there. I told the coaches at both Miami and Ohio State and that my decision is final. I'm going to Miami."
