Super DB Names Favorite

This standout defensive back prospect just returned from an offical visit this weekend and he discusses the visit and his current standing with us. He also names a favorite as of today.

At 6-foot-2 and 195 pounds, St. Augustine, Fla. standout safety Willie Cooper took his official visit to Florida State this weekend.

"It was real tight," Cooper said. "I had a good time hanging out with everyone. It was like a reunion from the CaliFlorida Bowl because I hung out with Amp [Hill], Reggie [Nelson], Bird [Ryan Gilliam], Cliff [Dickson] and Dee [Webb] too. I also hung out with Joe Cohen. I also talked to Kenny Scott and two cats from New Orleans [Pittman and Franklin]. We all hung out with Greg Jones, Michael Boulware, Cro Thorpe and some of those guys."

Cooper said aside from enjoying the visit with the other players, he wanted to take a few minutes to talk to Bobby Bowden one-on-one.

"Basically he was saying just what every other coach says," he said. "He tells you want you want to hear. But I talked to him one-on-one about what I've been reading in the newspapers about retirement. He said he has no interest in that and has every intention of getting Florida State back on top. That's what I wanted to hear from him."

Cooper made the visit with his mother, father, and younger brother.

"We really weren't together that much but they got to see what it's like," he said. "They liked it. Coach Bowden's a smooth talker like that to parents."

The standout safety said he got to know some of the other recruits a little better.

"I hung out a lot with Reggie and Joe," he said. "They cool like that. We're actually going to Florida together next week and then Miami together on the 24th. They're looking at the same ones and they're like me -- trying to figure out which one is best for me."

Cooper said if he had to name a favorite, he'd go with the Seminoles.

"Aside from that being my first big visit and everything," he said, "I like FSU because it's a football town. There's always something going on. FSU athletics are a year-round thing in the city of Tallahassee."

Cooper said he did hang out with one player that appears headed to Miami.

"Dickson's a Miami guy," he said. "That's all he talks about. He's a good guy, I like him. He makes everyone laugh all the time."

Cooper said he'll likely make his decision after the Miami visit.

"I might take another trip to Penn State or Georgia on the 31st but I'll probably know where I'm going," he said. "I'll see how Florida and Miami compare to Florida State and talk to my family about it because they're going to be with me on my other two visits too."
