Hurricanes Improve to 3-0

The Miami baseball team clinched the series win with a 10-3 win over Campbell Friday night at Mark Light Stadium in Coral Gables. Freshman third baseman Gaby Sanchez led the offense for the Hurricanes going 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring two runs with three RBI, while fellow freshman Ryan Braun turned in a 3-for-4 performance and smacked his first home run.

Brandon Camardese notched the first win as a Hurricane, turning in a career-best performance with 5.0 innings pitched and eight strikeouts, while only allowing two hits and one run. UM improved to 3-0 on the season in front of 2,915 fans. Campbell fell to 0-2 on the season.

The Hurricanes got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning with a RBI single from Sanchez. Danny Figueroa led off with a single up the middle. Adam Ricks was then hit in the calf by a pitch to put runners on first and second base. Figueroa and Ricks stole third and second, respectively, preceding the Sanchez single. Right fielder Brian Barton followed with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Ricks.

Campbell answered UM's two runs in the top of the fourth inning, as Chris Wiley led off with a sharp single up the middle. Josh Cotton drew a walk from Miami starter Brandon Camardese. Derek Barrows laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over. With one out, Kyle Ellenz grounded out to shortstop to score Wiley. Camardese struck out the designated hitter Jason Brown looking to get out of the inning.

The Fighting Camels snuffed out another Hurricanes scoring opportunity in the fourth inning, as CU centerfielder Jeff Blick made a diving catch in right-center field, doubling up Matt Barket at first.

With one out in the fifth inning, a pitch plunked Danny Figueroa and Ricks followed with a double. Sanchez then doubled down the leftfield line, score both Figueroa and Ricks. The RBIs were Sanchez's fifth and sixth of the young season. The clean-up hitter Barton was hit by a pitch and Jim Burt followed with a line drive single to left scoring Sanchez, chasing Campbell's starting pitcher, Jeff Stovall, after 4.1 innings of work.

The freshman duo of Sanchez and Ryan Braun accounted for two more runs in the seventh to increase the UM lead to 7-1. Sanchez doubled off the leftfield wall to open the inning. Braun followed two batters later with a deep blast to right-center field. Campbell chased UM reliever Shawn Valdes-Fauli, who gave up three hits and two runs in one-third of an inning. Tom King came in and struck out two batters to get out of the jam.

The Hurricanes will complete the series with Campbell Saturday at 4 p.m. with Ryan Dixon getting the start on the mound for Miami.
