Report: New RB's Coach

Tommie Robinson left his job as running backs coach at the University of Miami last week to take the same position for the Arizona Cardinals. His replacement...

First it was Clint Hurtt and then Tommie Robinson. Two UM assistant coaches have left Miami since the end of the season. Hurtt is now at Louisville and Robinson with the Cardinals.

Randy Shannon made a big hire when he brought in longtime defensive line coach Rick Petri. He now appears to have decided on Robinson's replacement.

According to, FIU running backs coach/recruiting coordinator Mike Cassano has accepted the job. We'll post confirmation on this report when UM offers an official press release, which could happen as early as Tuesday.

Cassano played defensive back at both Colgate and New Hampshire before beginning his coaching career. Starting in 1994, he spent three seasons as a graduate assistant at Lehigh and Eastern Michigan before becoming the running backs coach at Brown in 1997 (where he worked under current UM offensive coordinator Mark Whipple). He followed Whipple to UMass, where he served as running backs coach there from 1998 through 2004. He served as a GA at UM during the 05 and 06 seasons before spending the next three seasons at FIU.

Cassano is considered a very bright young college coach who has developed a reputation of being an excellent recruiter.
