Spring Preview: QB's

Spring football starts at the University of Miami on Tuesday so it's time to take a look at the team heading into the month-long session.

This will be the first time in a very long time that a Miami team will go through all of spring without its starting quarterback. Jacory Harris is out for spring and so the younger guys will get plenty of opportunities.

Three quarterbacks are expected to share the reps -- junior walk-on Spencer Whipple, sophomore A.J. Highsmith, and true freshman Stephen Morris.

Whipple did a nice job leading the Scout team last year after Taylor Cook and Cannon Smith transferred just before the season started. The son of UM coach Mark Whipple, Spencer began his career at Pittsburgh before spending some time at UMass. He understands the game really well and is looking to have a solid spring.

Highsmith is a former three-star prospect who received just a few snaps as a true freshman last season. The son of former UM great Alonzo Highsmith, A.J. could end up playing safety before his Miami playing days are over but he'll have a chance to compete for the backup quarterback job this spring.

Morris, a three-star recruit in this past recruiting class, just started taking classes at Miami a few weeks ago. He's a local product with a good arm and a good mind for the game and this first spring will be huge in his young development under Whipple.

While Harris is out, it'll give these three kids a chance to receive lots of reps, work with the first unit, and give the coaches a much better idea of who the No. 2 quarterback will be heading into the summer.
