Spring Game Analysis (defense)

Miami's annual spring football game took place on Saturday and CanesTime.com was there. Read on to get a defensive review of the team's performance today.

I just got back from watching Miami's spring football game. It went really well. The team played for a little over two hours today and over the next couple days we'll have a position-by-position breakdown of the team along with a photo gallery, several interviews, and much more. I'll start with a quick review based on what I thought.

DL: This looks like the deepest unit on the team right now. They're playing on a different level than previous years. They seem to be coming off the ball better, using their hands more, and just seem really active. It wasn't just one or two, it was a bunch of them. Bailey was Bailey. Dyron Dye made some plays. Marcus Robinson was active. The tackles were tough to move and limited the inside running game. This group has a chance to be really special if they can stay healthy, stay motivated, and figure out a good rotation that keeps them fresh and in rhythm.

LB: Colin McCarthy and Sean Spence were all over the place making plays today. They were two of the best players on the field today and both look very comfortable with having a linebackers coach again. Remember, they didn't really have one last year. Kylan Robinson looked OK in the middle. The second unit struggled at times. Shayon Green doesn't look 100 percent yet. CJ Holton isnt there yet. Tyrone Cornileus, while he makes a lot of freshman mistakes, was very active and showed good instincts. He could get some PT this season. Remember, though, two of the top 4 guys were out -- Ramon Buchanan (who looks much bigger than this time last year) and Jordan Futch.

CB: Brandon Harris didn't dress. Demarcus Van Dyke was pretty good in coverage. Brandon McGee was hot and cold but has all the physical tools. The walkon, Gholston, really struggled and was picked on often. Getting Harris back will be nice and getting those four true freshmen this summer will be welcome additions.

S: Three guys kept rotating and all were active. Vaughn Telemaque is the best safety on the team right now and it showed today. He has a chance to be pretty good. Ray Ray makes a lot of big plays. He had a few big hits and a couple picks but he still makes mistakes. Jamal Reid doesn't have that playmaking ability but he understands the game very well and is around the ball a ton.
