Kayvon's Pre-Game Take

The Miami Hurricanes needed a win more than anything else. They were without star player Darius Rice and they were on the road. A place they haven't won all conference season long. Things didn't look good but the younger players finally stepped it up.

Miami came away victorious for the first time on the road this season against VT. Both teams are tied for last place in the EAST standings but Miami holds the tie breaker advantage because they have beaten VT both at home and away.

Next up for the Canes: St. Johns.

A win by the young Hurricanes and there are still some hopes for an NCAA tournament birth albeit, no team has ever won the Big East Tournament by winning four games in four days.

A loss by the young Hurricanes and all hopes of a postseason are up in the air, hanging on the outcome of the VT @ WVU game. A VT win coupled by a Miami loss would send the Hokies to the Big East tournament leaving the Canes out.

The good news: VT plays on the road in a hostile environment. Miami also has the luxury of playing at home where they have faired much better than on the road.

The bad news: St. Johns is coming off back to back very impressive victories over top ranked Duke and Big East rival Rutgers. Darius Rice may not be full recovered from the torn ligaments in his shooting hand.

Therefore, if VT loses in the earlier game come Saturday, it may be advisable for Perry Clark to just rest his star player for the Big East Tournament.

There is one game left in the regular season. One game to prove that Miami belongs in the Big East. A conference where anything can happen and upsets are plentiful.

Miami will need their younger players like Surratt, Hite, Wilkins and Hamilton to shine and prove they have matured during the course of the season.

Miami will need Senior leader James Jones to prove himself one final time to the NBA scouts that he belongs and deserves to be drafted.

Miami will need to figure out a way to shut down star Guard Marcus Hatten, a task the Canes have failed numerous times throughout the season as seen by the performances by Troy Bell, Gary Buchanon and Ben Gordon to name a few.

Miami will need to win and instill some confidence back into the team and create some sort of momentum going into the BET. They cannot afford to rely on a VT loss and they must take care of their own business at home.
