Another Carolina 3-Star Picks Miami

When former Michigan State Coordinator Don Treadwell was hired as Miami's Head Coach last winter, most fans anticipated more Midwest recruiting battles. While the RedHawks have verbal commitments from 11 in-state players, their recruiting success in the South has raised eyebrows.

This past weekend Miami continued their Palmetto State streak and received a commitment from Ridgeland (SC) DE Wesley Scott.

Wesley Scott, who now measures at 6'4 and 240 pounds, had trouble being seen by college scouts because his Ridgeland Jaguars play in one of South Carolina's smallest conferences. To help his visibility, Scott made the rounds at this summer's college camps and impressed coaches from across the South, the Midwest and the East Coast. Since that time, Clemson, Georgia Tech and Maryland have come to visit the three star DE from South Carolina. Many coaches and writers saw Scott's tremendous upside, but wanted to wait for his raw skills to develop. Miami's recruiting team, with deep South Carolina connections, were the first to offer and are now seeing the dividends. "I really like Miami because it is a really good fit. They were the first school to really show interest and they really proved to me that they wanted me the most," said the standout defensive end.

What has Scott most excited about coming to Oxford? "I really like the coaches. They really inspire me. The night I decided I was going to Miami, I played one of my best games and had six tackles and one sack," he said. While his game is still progressing, Wesley said his strongest attribute right now is his long wingspan, which creates separation from offensive linemen and allows him to rip through blocks.

Like many other commits, Wesley Scott also mentioned Miami's campus as a major selling point. "It's definitely where I am going to end up," he said, "I wish I could speed up time. I am ready to get to campus and play." For now, though, Scott is focused on a familiar team for RedHawk fans, his Ridgeland Jaguars host fellow Miami commit, David Deleon, this Friday evening.
