With 4 Sweet Sixteen appearances, 20 MAC Championships and 2 Top 8 NBA Draft picks, Miami boasts one of the best resumes among mid-major college basketball programs. While recent history hasn't been as remarkable, Miami's new coaching staff has reenergized the program and is looking to return the team to it's traditional powerhouse stature. As the recruiting period winds down, could a battle for highly touted Randy Onwuasor be the pivotal first step toward a return to prominence?
When Miami's Head Coach John Cooper talks about bringing in players to fit his uptempo gameplan, he envisions athletic guards that have the ability to play in-your-face defense the length of the court, the vision to create for teammates, and the shooting range to stretch defenses. Few guards in the 2013 class fit that mold like Randy Onwuasor. The 6'3 point guard weighs in at 190 pounds and had a breakout senior season that catapulted his recruiting stock. He led his Inglewood High School team with 16.6 points and over 6 assists per game.
Miami's reemergence among national recruits is a small victory in itself, but Onwuasor's fit within John Cooper's offense cannot be understated. In his highlight film (available on his Scout page), Onwuasor manages his team's offense and plays with the high energy motor that has led Cooper's teams to success. Additionally, Onwuasor has the athleticism and play-making abilities to contribute significant minutes as a freshman while creating for Miami's 2013 signees from Australia Jaryd Eustace and Joshua Oswald.
Since Onwuasor has emerged on the national scene, he has drawn interest from many major programs, but has whittled down his options to a few schools. He was offered by St. Louis University and visited their campus on April 11th. Onwuasor has also received interest from Utah and Pitt as of late and will be visiting Seton Hall in the near future, but this weekend is reserved for Miami. The California native will be visiting Oxford on April 26th and the forecast calls for good weather. As many Miami fans and alumni know, the campus in spring can be very enticing for recruits. Many RedHawk fans will have their fingers crossed.
