Q&A With Miami Commit Andrew Phelan

The Miami RedHawks landed their second offensive lineman in the span of a week, when Lakota West's Andrew Phelan committed to Miami Wednesday night. Phelan was getting feelers from some big time programs, but decided to end his commitment while holding offers from a who's who of mid-major schools. RedHawk Insider caught up to Phelan to discuss his commitment to the Miami.

Is it true you committed to Miami University Wednesday night?
Yes I did.

What were you thinking as you were going through the process of making that decision?
I was trying to do what was best for myself and step into the right situation. I felt at home with the coaches.

What other schools were you considering down the stretch?
Ohio and Toledo were the other two I was really considering. There was also Buffalo, Eastern Michigan, and Bowling Green.

What were the factors that helped you rule out those other schools and decide to commit to Miami?
Coach Montgomery being honest with me, as well as Coach Wright. And there was relationship I built with Coach Hohman.

What do you think will make you an asset to Miami once you start playing at the college level?
I have a nasty streak. I play to the whistle. I think another strength is my pass blocking.

Is there anything the coaches have told you they want to see you work on in your senior year of high school?
Hit the weight room and get stronger.

A former teammate of yours at Lakota West, Alex Kaufman, is currently a freshman at Miami. Did the fact that you have a former teammate at Miami impact your decision?
I talk to Alex a lot, and I know he is an honest guy. He told me the truth about Miami football, so that did have a lot to do with it.

What is the truth about Miami football?
He told me the coaches are honest and good guys. He really enjoys it. If it's good enough for him, it's good enough for me.
