Miami seniors Carl Richburg and Tyler Dierkers have been playing together for Brick Street in the Deveroes Summer League. After one of their games, RedHawk Insider met up with both of them for a quick question and answer session about the upcoming season. Tell me about the prospects for the upcoming season.

DIERKERS: It is real exciting for me. We have a strong group of seniors coming back, obviously. I am mostly excited about the young guys coming in who are real hungry to play. There should be a lot of competition for spots, and that only brings out the best in people. So, I am real excited to get the season going.

RICHBURG: I am real excited about it for my senior season. Especially for the team, us losing to Kent State last year really put a fire in everybody for this summer. Hopefully everyone is working hard this summer so we can come back. Particularly our new guys need to contribute this year and take us over the hump and take down Kent State and all the other MAC foes we have.

You have been able to play with on Brick Street the new players Julian Mavunga and Vince Legarza. What comments do you have about them?

DIERKERS: I am real excited about that. Julian played a great game today. He is real athletic and brings a lot to the table. I really have not had a chance to play much with (Kramer Soderberg and Vince Legarza) yet. Real excited about them though; big body with Vince and a smart guard in Kramer.

RICHBURG: I am really excited for them to come in. Mavunga and Vince both have their separate qualities that they bring to the team. Size is always welcome on any team and particularly our team.Their size and ability to shoot the ball will increase our depth and our overall team play.

Tyler, with Tim Pollitz leaving, is your role going to change this year?

DIERKERS: I think so, very much. I think the whole dynamic of our team will change. Not that it was a bad thing, but sometimes we would attempt to get the ball to Tim and then just stand around. Whereas this year, it kind of opens up and everyone will make more plays. I think everyone is going to really flourish in that offense.

Carl, with Alex Moosmann gone does your role change?

RICHBURG: I think so. Hopefully I can contribute a little more than I did last year and make a better effort on both sides of the ball. I want to bring a defensive presence and an ability to make the outside shot. I am working on (reducing) turnovers this year. I am really looking forward to this season and really contributing and helping the team improve a lot and making the NCAA tournament, especially.

Who will be the surprise this year?

DIERKERS: I am going to be the surprise this year. I am going to play like I have never played before. I am looking forward to it and you will see some good things out of me. I think Richburg will surprise some people this year with his leadership and his ability to control the team.

RICHBURG: Every year Dierkers seems to improve and prove people wrong. I think he is going to have a breakout year. Our young guys, also, like (Nick) Winbush, Kenny (Hayes), Dwight (McCombs) and Rodney Haddix. Haddix, who you really didn't get to see much of last year because he was, injured most of the time, is really working hard this summer. All our returners, Eric Pollitz, you know he is going to bring something to the table, especially this year. Everyone has made a concerted effort to improve their game because we all feel that if we all improve our game just a little we can bring this team up to the next level.

Anything else you would like to add?

DIERKERS: I would just like to say I am really excited for this season. I think we are going to surprise a lot of people. I hope everyone enjoys our basketball this year. I know I will.

RICHBURG: We are just looking forward to having a great year. Watch out for us because I think we will make the NCAA tournament this year and turn a lot of people's heads with the big time names that we play this year. Hopefully we can take one of those teams down.
