The 6-foot-10, 210 pound McGhee is one of the top two centers in the Ohio class of 2009. When RedHawk Insider spoke to McGhee in earlier stories, he gave the following list of schools recruiting him: All of the MAC, Davidson, Stanford, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, Marquette, Minnesota, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Baylor, Butler, Providence, and St. Louis.
Last month, McGhee listed five schools that are recruiting him the hardest: Penn State, Miami (OH), Butler, Kent, and Davidson. "Miami has been pretty much at every game I have played. And also Penn State. Those are the only ones I noticed."
McGhee has rewarded four of those five schools by naming them in his final four schools he is considering. Those four are Miami, Penn State, Kent, and Davidson. Of those four, McGhee said he does not have any leaders.
McGhee will definitely take two scheduled official visits in September. On the weekend of the 6th, Penn State will host. On the weekend of the 27th, he will visit Davidson. McGhee said he might take an official visit to Kent on the weekend of the 20th, but is unsure at this point if he wants to visit Kent. Miami will definitely get an official visit as well.
So why did those four schools make the cut? McGhee said the following about each school:
"Davidson is a good team. They made the Elite 8 last year. I like the coaches and everything about Davidson. I have not seen the campus yet so I cannot say if I like that."
"With Penn State, I really like the team. The campus is beautiful. It is in a big conference (Big Ten). They have four scholarships for my class."
"I like the coaches, players, and campus. It is a good situation for me. It is a small school and not as big a conference (MAC). They always contend in the MAC and it is closer to home."
"Kent has made the NCAA tournament 3 of out the last 4 years. I like the coaches. The campus is alright."
The key issue on McGhee's mind is whether he wants to go to school at the big conference team (Penn State) or play on a winning midmajor powerhouse (Miami, Kent, and Davidson).
McGhee has already taken unofficial visits to Miami (June 5th), Butler, Penn State, Bowling Green, Toledo, and Western Michigan. His visits to Miami and Penn State stuck out. He has not made any visits in the last two months.
During his junior season at North Ridgeville, he averaged 17 points, 13 rebounds, and a very impressive 6 blocks per game.
Stay tuned to RedHawk Insider as we continue follow the recruitment of Drew McGhee.
