(East Lansing) – Detroit St. Martin DePorres led from the beginning to the end en route to the Class C basketball title in the state of Michigan.

The Eagles (27-1), led by senior guard Brandon Cotton’s 25 points and four assists, defeated Flint Beecher (22-6) 62-46 on Saturday at the Breslin Center.

In a game that showcased two MSU recruits, Cotton got the better of Beecher’s junior center Marquise Gray, who finished with 17 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks.

Gray struggled to get clear look the first three quarters because of a tough double team by the Eagles, but was able to get some looks late in the fourth quarter.

DePorres took a 29-17 lead at halftime, with Cotton scoring 12 of his 25 points in the first half.

In the third quarter the Eagles continued to pour it on and by the beginning of the fourth quarter, DePorres extended the lead to 51-31, before the Buccaneers went on a 6-0 run to cut it to a reasonable deficit. DePorres responded by dribbling more than 2 minutes off the clock, to secure the victory.

Cotton hit 8 field goals and knocked down 9-of-10 from the free-throw line. Gray led Beecher in scoring with 8 field goals and 1-of-4 shooting from the line.

This ends Cotton’s phenomenal season and tournament run. Cotton averaged 24.7 points in the seven-game championship run. The 6-foot point guard will join the Spartans in the backcourt next season.

For Gray, even though the season ended on a sour note, he has a lot to look forward to. The 6-foot-8 man-child wrapped a great season for Beecher, who has to be a favorite for with him returning the lineup next season.
