Not only did Junior Defensemen Brock Shelgren open the scoring at 9:22 of the first period after receiving a great pass by Trevor Nill to beat rookie goaltender Dan Sullivan glove side, he assisted on the game winner taking a loose puck from center ice and dished it to Gazley.
Even with a penalty filled second period Michigan State could not take advantage of the man advantage despite some great chances. The hard working Spartan skaters saw it finally pay off when Brett Perlini scored for the second consecutive night, taking a pass from behind the net from freshmen Lee Reimer to bury it from the right side.
Spartan Junior goaltender Drew Palmisano made 28 saves which included 13 shots by Maine in the final period to preserve the victory.
"Getting 3 points in the opening series of the season against a top 10 team proved to me that we can play with really good teams in saying that we still have questions to be answered involving this group of players but we will take on it and build on it" said head coach Comley after the game Friday night.
Up next for the green and white they will begin conference play as they host Alaska in a two game set at Munn Ice Arena beginning this Friday 7:05pm puck drop.
