Lady Spartans Defeat IPFW 90-62

The Michigan State women's basketball team opened up the season Saturday afternoon with a convincing 90-62 win over the Mastodons of IPFW.

The 25th ranked green and white showed their quality of depth and versatility with 6 players in double figures, led by Junior guard Porsche Poole with 12 points coming off the bench.

Michigan State led 22-13 with 8:06 left in the first half, then went on a 29-8 run to take a 51-21 lead at the half.

Senior forward Kalisha Keane scored 10 and in the process recorded her 1,000 point as a Spartan. Redshirt freshmen center Kelsey Smith also chipped in with 10 points 5 rebounds and three blocks.

"That is our goal to spread the ball around obviously we have more depth in our guard position then in our post play. I do like some of the things we can do, we have play makers, we have scorers and we have kids that can bang and get physical but it is still a work in progress." Said coach Merchant after the game.

With the victory, the Spartans improve to 3-1 in opening games with Suzy Merchant at the helm.
