Spartans In The Polls & More

The Spartans now sit in the tenth position of the BCS with an average of .6063. This week's win over Purdue moved the Spartans up from their twelfth spot of a week ago. The Spartans first entered the BCS in the seventh position and have been as high as fifth until the loss to Iowa dropped them down to fourteenth.

BCS Standings

With three Big Ten teams in the Top Ten, it is good for the conference as a whole.  However, the Spartans look to be on the outside looking in with Wisconsin (seventh) and Ohio State (eighth) looking secured in their positions if they win out.

This is where the system shows it flaws and has fans of several programs at odds with the whole process.

If you are going to lose, you had better lose early if you hope to have any chance of being in the Top Ten.  Wisconsin, who Michigan State defeated in Week Five of the season, has been impressive to say the least, but the Spartans did beat the Badgers by 10 points.

The Buckeyes, loss to Wisconsin two weeks later, but have still managed to find a way to get a step ahead of the Spartans.

Two weeks after the Buckeyes loss to Wisconsin, Michigan State earned their only blemish on the season falling to Iowa.  Yes, the Hawkeyes blew out the Spartans, and you can understand how some would vote the Spartans lower than both Wisconsin and Ohio State, but the fact remains the Spartans defeated the Badgers in convincing fashion.

Now, the Spartans must take care of business at Penn State and fans of the Spartans must look to Michigan to knock off Ohio State.  The Buckeyes are the main obstacle for MSU to reach a BCS bowl.

While it would also be nice to see Wisconsin fall to Northwestern, the Buckeyes are the one who must stumble.

Top 25 AP

The Spartans stayed right where they were last week at the eleventh position in the AP Top 25.  Oklahoma State jumped over the Spartans to the tenth spot while Alabama, with two losses on the season moved up one spot to the ninth position.

USA Today Coaches' Poll

The Spartans moved up one spot and back into the Top Ten in the Coaches' Poll.  Unlike the AP Poll, Alabama and their two losses are behind the Spartans in the eleventh spot.  The Big Ten has three teams in the Top Ten here with Wisconsin in the fifth spot and Ohio State ranked seventh.
