All season long MSU head coach Tom Izzo has said that if it wasnt for his talented staff he wouldnt have achieved all the success the university has enjoyed over the past five years.
It was that coaching staff that has an amazing 9-1 record in one-day preparations. Its that coaching staff that has challenged and taught NBA players such as Jason Richardson, Mateen Cleaves and Morris Peterson.
Assistant coaches Brian Gregory, Mike Garland and Mark Montgomery deserve a lot of credit for helping this young team, who struggled through injuries and doubt the first half of the year, persevere and reach the Elite Eight.
Unfortunately that time is now. Gregory is one of the hardest working assistants in the business and his intelligence has him in the running for the head job at Illinois State. Garland, who is not slouch either, is being sought after by Cleveland State University.
The Lansing State Journal reported that Gregory was on Illinois States campus in Normal, Illinois on Tuesday and that Garland has expressed a high interest in the vacancy at Cleveland State.
The next few weeks will prove how solid a program MSU has built and how successful it has been at grooming some of the best coaches in the country.
Just like Izzo said at the beginning of the 2001-02 season about his young team, "were not rebuilding, were reloading," and thats exactly what the coaching staff will be doing next season.
