Spartan Digest Take: Lawrence Thomas

With National Signing Day fast approaching, it is time we start looking at each of the Spartans verbal pledges and give our assessment about the good, bad, and future of each. Up next is 5-star defensive end Lawrence Thomas of Detroit (MI) Renaissance High School.

When talk starts about the Spartans recruiting class it starts with Lawrence Thomas, as he is the marquee name on the Spartans board.

While Thomas started as a linebacker, his future continues to look like that of a defensive end at the college level.

What To Like

When the Spartans held their Senior Camp this past summer, Thomas was one of the biggest surprises as he hit the field looking like a giant. With that said, his performance left everyone talking about how good he can be at the college level.

Great size, strength, and speed for a person of his size, Thomas will have a chance to be a great one in the Spartans program in the coming years.

What May Concern You

Did the Spartans recruit Thomas as a middle linebacker? On the other hand, did they feel he would grow into a defensive end? If it was the first, then they might have been surprised when Thomas showed up to summer camp at 255-pounds.

Either way the Spartans are getting a great one and at this time, nothing is a concern when looking at his future at Michigan State.

Bottom Line

Defensive end or middle linebacker will be answered when Thomas reports to East Lansing. After watching film and seeing Thomas in mid-July at camp, the future progress for this 5-star prospect will be watched just as close as it was for William Gholston last fall.

With solid depth at both positions, Thomas will have a chance to compete early and get reps, as his talent will be just too good to keep off the field.
