Gregory expected to be announced as new head coach

Brian Gregory, an associate head coach under Tom Izzo, will be named the new head coach at an Atlantic 10 school this afternoon. Earlier this week Gregory turned down a job at Illinois State in hopes of finding a better fit.

Gregory, an assistant at MSU for ten years, will be named head coach of the Dayton Flyers today, according to the University of Dayton's athletic Web site.

Gregory will take over for Oliver Purnell, who accepted the head coaching job at Clemson University earlier this week.

The Illinois native, will take over a squad that will have four starters back and finished 24-6. The Flyers were ranked 16th in the last Associated Press Poll.

Mike Garland, MSU's other top assistant, had a second interview with Cleveland State and remains a hot commodity.

If Garland takes a head coaching job, that will make five former assistant coaches, who have served under Tom Izzo at MSU in just eight years.

The other four are: Stan Joplin (Toledo), Stan Heath (Arkansas), Tom Crean (Marquette) and now Gregory.
