Voltz Talks Spartans

With signing day on Wednesday, Michigan State is wasting little time in hitting the Class of 2012 hard as they have handed out several offers. One of those offers went to Dan Voltz of Barrington (IL) High School and Voltz came away impressed.

"I was at Michigan State's Junior Day,"  Dan Voltz, a 6-foot-4, 290-pound offensive lineman told Spartan Digest on Monday.  "It was awesome, it was my first time to East Lansing, and the campus was amazing.  The facilities were great, and the coaches were all down to earth people.  It was my first time to meet with Coach Dantonio and he is a great guy."

Looking back at the visit, Dan said a few things stuck out to him about the Spartans program.

"How new and big everything was.  I have been all over the place and it is one of the biggest and nicest I have seen.  They have a player's lounge and it's one of the nicest I have seen so far."

With the attention he is receiving early, Dan says he is surprised by all the attention.

"I never thought I would be one of those kids who got early interest.  It started last June when I got my first three offers in camps, and things have really picked up the past several weeks.  It is very surprising."

Off the field, Dan tries to be a normal kid but does enjoy hitting the lakes.

"In the summertime I like to fish a lot.  Other than that, I am just a normal kid and do not doing anything spectacular."

Beside football, Dan participates on his schools track team throwing the discus and shot put.

As for what he is looking for in a school, Dan knows there has to be an equal between competing on the field while also keeping academics in mind.

"I am looking at academics and a good football tradition.  The school I chose will have to have good seasons and play in bowl games.  I am also looking at the overall environment and the campus as a whole.  If you do not feel comfortable with everything, there is a good chance it is not the place for you to spend the next four of five years."

Beside Michigan State, Dan has visited Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Tennessee, Ohio State, and Northwestern.

The Wildcats do hold a place close to his heart.

"I would not say I have a dream school to play for.  However, I grew up a big Northwestern fan and have been to lots of games there over the years.  I am very open about the schools I have interest in at this time."

While Sunday was just the first step the Spartans have taken in their recruitment of Dan, he left feeling good about the overall experience.

"I would say out of all the places I have seen, Michigan State is at the top.  It is a place I will be really looking into and considering heavy."

As for when Dan hopes to end his recruiting, he has a plan in place.

"Since last year when I received my first couple of offers, I have thought about making my commitment prior to my senior season.  However, if I am not totally sure, I would look at pushing it back until I was comfortable with my decision."

Spartan Digest will continue to follow Dan Voltz in the coming weeks, as his recruiting is sure to continue its climb.
