Stanton stakes claim as No. 1

In the last controlled scrimmage before Saturday's Green and White game, the offense once again looked impressive. Besides Drew Stanton, another quarterback shined, put at another position.

Stanton took the majority of snaps in the 81-play controlled scrimmage at Spartan Stadium. He completed 16-of-23 passes for 117 yards and one touchdown.

Stanton's lone touchdown pass was to former quarterback-turned wide receiver Aaron Alexander who hauled in the 13-yard touchdown. Alexander finished with three catches for 33 yards.

Damon Dowdell completed four-of-seven passes for 57 yards and Jeff Smoker five-of-nine passes for 89 plays and directed three touchdown drives for the first- and second-team offenses.

Wide receiver Agim Shabaj had four catches for 73 yards and tight end Eric Knott had four receptions for 20 yards.

Running back Tyrell Dortch had 43 yards on the ground on 11 carries and Jaren Hayes added two rushing touchdowns.

On the defensive side of the ball, linebacker Ronald Stanley had seven tackles and linebacker Seth Mitchell had four tackles.

The Spartans also got a good performance from place kicker Dave Rayner who connected on field goals of 49 and 47 yards.
