Garland next assistant to leave

The MSU basketball program will have two coaching positions open after Mike Garland moves on to a head coaching job. Garland will become the new coach of a Horizon League school.

Mike Garland will accept the head coaching position at Cleveland State University on Wednesday.

Garland will join Brian Gregory, the new Dayton coach, as the newest members of MSU assistant coaches who went on to become head coaches.

Garland takes over for Rollie Massimino who resigned after finishing 8-22 in the Horizon League last season.

The former Belleville varsity basketball coach has been with Tom Izzo for seven years. Garland was a teammate on Izzo's on Northern Michigan's basketball team.

The lone remaining assistant from last year's staff is Mark Montgomery. No word as two when the two positions will be filled.

One name that has been mentioned is former MSU assistant and current Houston Rockets assistant Jim Boylen. Boylen was an assistant under Jud Heathcote from 1987-92.
