Spring Breakdown: Running Back

As we start breaking down each position, the Spartans get ready to take the field on Tuesday for the first of 15 days of practice. Next, we look at the running back position.

To say Michigan State is blessed is an understatement when looking at the running back position.  Not only do the Spartans have a pair of backs capable of starting, they have a trio of proven backs with another youngster looking to show his overall abilities.

Edwin Baker enters the spring with 13 career starts and a very impressive 2010 season.  Things should only get better for Baker as he continues to improve upon his skill set.

While Baker enjoyed the spoils of a great sophomore season, his running mate Larry Caper saw injury slow down his start.  However, Caper was able to rebound and be a productive player when called upon.  Look for Caper to have a strong spring and be ready to climb back into the talk as a starter.

The wildcard last season was freshman Le'Veon Bell who had a great spring followed by a breakout freshman season.  With a ton of experience in key games under his belt, do not be surprised if Bell takes another step towards pushing on the reps given to Baker and Caper.

Also, keep in mind that last spring found Nick Hill enjoying some success as well.  Because of the depth at the position, Hill found his season become a redshirt one giving him another four seasons in the Green & White.
