Spartans Working on Florida QB

Class of 2012 quarterback Bennie Coney has plenty of suitors when it comes to college football programs looking to sign him. Do the Spartans have an advantage with the Florida native? Spartan Digest spoke with Coney about his interest in Michigan State.

A couple of years ago Michigan State headed to Plant City (FL) High School and signed under the radar prospect Denzel Drone. Now Drone is showing signs of being a regular along the Spartans defensive line entering his third season with the Green & White.

Now, Spartans defensive backs coach Harlon Barnett is back at Plant City looking to sign 3-star quarterback Bennie Coney. How does Coney feel about the Spartans?

"Coach Barnett is recruiting me from Michigan State. He came down like last week and watched us practice. I have not been able to do a lot of research on Michigan State yet and that is my fault. So I'm going to be doing some homework on them."

One thing that looks as a positive is Coney is set to attend the Spartans senior summer camp in mid June. Will distance play a factor in Coney's decision?

"Distance does not matter to me, I'm planning to leave the state and explore some new things. If I leave I'm going away so it does not matter."

While some are quick label Coney as an athlete or running quarterback, he stresses he loves to throw the football.

"My strengths are that I love to throw the football, just love to throw the ball. I've been working on my footwork and it is getting better and better. I don't just like to run but run when I need to. I don't just hike the ball and run, I like to throw the ball first. I've been putting in the work to improve my game."

Could help from Drone and a campus visit this summer help the Spartans pull in one of the top prospects out of Florida? That question will have to wait to be answered later in the recruiting process.
