Kelly High on the Spartans

Chad Kelly continues to see his scholarship offer list climb and on Friday was in Columbus, Ohio for the Elite 11 Quarterback Camp. Spartan Digest spoke with Kelly about his Spartan offer and his day at camp.

With the whole recruiting world knowing Buffalo (NY) St. Joseph Collegiate quarterback Chad Kelly is the nephew of NFL Hall of Famer Jim Kelly, eyes are always watching the 6-foot-3, 195-pound signal caller. Has Kelly seen this effect his recruiting?

"It does a little bit. I'm with my uncle two or three times a week and we're always talking about football. He says live it and don't worry about the name attached because everybody is going to do that. He says make yourself what you are and be the best you can be."

How did Kelly felt he did on Friday?

"I think I did good. There are things I can work on and even the best guys here have things to work on. But to come out here and compete and have fun, that is what I love to do."

One program Kelly is high on is Michigan State who has offered. How good of a relationship is Kelly building with the Spartan coaches?

Big time, Coach Dantonio, Coach Salem and Coach Warner are all great guys. Coach Roushar was up at my school a couple of weeks ago. After he visited I spoke with him on the phone. This was only the second time I got to talk with him, so my relationship with all of them is awesome."

One thing Kelly is really excited about his Michigan State offer, is the fact his uncle is a graduate of MSU and still lives in East Lansing.

"I have an uncle living in East Lansing and Michigan State is a place I could see myself attending. I went to the spring game a few weeks ago and I went to camp two years ago. But I'm always there and around as my uncle graduated from Michigan State.

"Michigan State is a great program with great academics and it is wonderful. It is also good to know my uncle lives there and I could go to his house anytime I wanted."

How much sas Kelly watched the Spartans in the past?

"I would say a good bit. I watch them all the time with my uncle going to all of their games. When they are on television I watch them first."

This past season Kelly saw a change of scenery moving from Pennsylvania to Buffalo, New York. On the field Kelly passed for more than 2,100 yards and 25 touchdowns and rushed for another 1,000 yards and scored 14 touchdowns.

With offers from Alabama, Clemson, Florida State and Syracuse to name a few, it will be interesting to see if the Spartans can use what looks like a high interest into a verbal commitment.
